Incident: Payments Won't Start

A page just fired: the payments Deployment has zero running Pods and checkout is down. You're not told why. Diagnose from the Pod's events and restore the service.

Your mission

Page: payments has zero healthy Pods; checkout is failing in production.

The Deployment was rolled out, but nothing is serving traffic. Your job is to find out why the Pods aren't starting and restore the service — you are not told the cause.

Work it the way on-call does:

kubectl get pods -n default # what state are the Pods in?
kubectl describe pod -n default <pod># read the Events at the bottom

The Events section of a stuck Pod almost always names the problem outright.

Useful aliases

In your terminal, k is aliased to kubectl and completion is configured. The jumpbox also has k9s, jq and yq installed.
